Absences

Hello!
Any time a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the student to see me before or after school or at lunch to pick up and complete missing assignments. After a week has passed from the day the child returned to school, the assignments can no longer be turned in.

ipads and notebooks

Hello,

Students need to bring their ipads charged everyday to class along with their history notebook.

10 week report cards and parent conferences

The grading window for the 10 week midterm report card opens TOMMORROW 10/8/15 and will close 10/16/15.

Report cards will be distributed to parents during Parent Conferencing on October 21 and 22.  If parents do not pick up their report card it will be put in school mail on Friday.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am excited to announce our 8th grade cross-curricular project-based learning assignment for the Fall 2015 semester. I know it will not only be fun and educational, but also engaging and memorable. Student teams are asked to consider the following question:

How does STEAM build bridges between school and families?

In the History and English portion of the project, students will reflect and write about who they are and how their family and background has influenced their personalities, values, and authentic selves. In addition to writing, students will create 2 art pieces to reflect themselves, one of which will remain at Wright MS STEAM Magnet as a piece of the Magnet School’s first class to have completed all three middle school years at Wright MS STEAM Magnet.

I am writing to you to ask for your help. Do you have any art/visual piece of family history and/or culture that your child could bring to class for a day to assist in the creation of his/her art piece?

Items may include fabric, quilt, religious piece, instrument, art piece, family crest/coat of arms, ceramic, tile, and pictures.

The dates are Wednesday, September 30, 2015 for students who are in my Period 4 and 6 classes, and Thursday, October 1, 2015 for my Period 1, 3, and 5 classes. Please contact me or have your student speak with me if she/he will be bringing a piece on the above date.

In addition, students will showcase their projects at our STEAM IN ACTION Night Tuesday, November 10, 2015, and Parents/Guardians and community members will be invited to view students’ final products and discuss with students their findings. Students are required to participate in the STEAM IN ACTION Night Event as it is tied to 10% of their project’s grade.

I’m very excited about this project, and I can’t wait to see what your child will create. If you should have any questions or concerns or would like to offer any support, please contact me at Wright MS STEAM Magnet at 310-258-6600 or via email at roxanne.schultz@lausd.net .

Sincerely,

Ms. Roxanne Schultz, History Teacher

Steam in Action!!! March 19, 2015

Hello Parents and Guardians,

Please mark your calendars for March 19th after school for our STEAM in Action Family and Community Night! As you all know, Wright STEAM Magnet is a Project-Based Learning school so your children will be presenting their second Interdisciplinary Project to their families and peers. Participation in this Bill of Rights event is required for every child, as it will count towards 10% of their final grade. In addition, they must be in professional attire such as a dress shirt and slacks and/or dress. At the end of their group's presentation, each child will have a task to complete that evening, so plan on attending the entire event.

Parents, please begin discussing with your children now the importance of these 21st century professional skills such as what makes a good speaker, the importance of professional attire, using academic language, and learning how to collaborate well with others.

Thank you for all that you do to support our children,

The 8th Grade Team

15 Week Report card

Have you received your child's 15 week report card??

There are only four weeks left before the final grades are due!

Project due Friday 11/7/14

Students have an illustrated and descriptive timeline due by the end of class on Friday 11/7/14. Please see attached file for directions and requirements. It is worth 200 points (a test grade). I will provide the students with the paper necessary to complete the timeline. Please do not buy a poster. Students were given most of class today (11/3/14) to start and will have all of class Tuesday and Friday to complete the assignment as well as Tuesday-Thursday evening. Students who complete their timeline before the due date will be given an enrichment assignment to complete, provided there is enough time left over.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
