Strategies for Reading

An excellent way to support your child’s education is to read with him/her.  It gives you an opportunity for personal time together and demonstrates that you value reading not only for academic purposes but also for recreation.

Parents can help re-enforce reading strategies and get crucial information on not only how well your child says the words but also understands what they are reading.  The strategies listed below are taught in the classroom and we ask your help in using them when you read with your child.  Thank you.

Predict :

  • Based on the title, I think this is going to be about…..
  • I think the next part will be about…..
  • Based on…clue), I predict…..

Visualize :

  • In my Mind I can see…..
  • When I read this, I can see…..
  • I picture…..

Connect :

  • This reminds me of…..
  • If I were…..
  • It seems like…..
  • I wonder why…..
  • I really like (don’t like)…..

Clarify :
