DISCIPLINE UPDATE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Definition: Bullying is defined as aggressive behavior that involves an imbalance of real or perceived physical or psychological power among those involved. Typically, the behavior is repeated over time and includes the use of hurtful words and/or acts.

How to deal with bullying:
  • Tell your parents or other trusted adults. They can help stop the bullying.
  • If you are bullied at school, tell your teacher, school counselor or principal. Telling is not tattling.
  • Don’t fight back. Don’t try to bully those who bully you.
  • Try not to show anger or fear. Students who bully like to see that they can upset you.
  • Calmly tell the student to stop…or say nothing and then walk away.
Bottom line - Always tell an adult because bullies generally do not go away. If someone is bullying you, most likely they are doing it to someone else also

Question: How has this year shaped up in terms of safety?

Mr. S: We have two full time campus aides, two part time campus aides and a School Safety Officer. We believe the campus is safe, but we are always looking for parent volunteers to assist us with supervision before and after school, during nutrition and at lunch time.

Question: Can you briefly explain supervision before and after school?
How about nutrition and lunch?

Mr. S: I have assigned staff to supervise in the front of the school, on the corner of 80th and Emerson, at the side entrance on Emerson and throughout the campus. You will see all of us out there with our walkie talkies.

Question: What changes have been made to motivate students?

Mr. S: We have increased our incentive program at the school allowing more students to participate in the positive incentive program. We continue to have Tardy Checks and the Saturday Behavior Support Academy as needed. I conduct the Saturday Academy myself at no cost to the school.
We have also encouraged parents to take a more active role if their child continues to have serious discipline problems. Some alternative methods we use in lieu of suspension are to ask the parent to stay on campus and monitor their child’s behavior. This has been very effective.

Question: Can you outline some of the crucial policies that have led to a safer school campus?

Mr. S: We continue to work with students who continually have behavior problems and try to address their needs as best we can.
  • Parent Monitoring
  • Saturday Academy where I will meet with the parent and the student and develop a contract.
  • During Record Room students work on lessons that address issues as bullying, sexual harassment, respect for one another etc.
  • I have assigned more supervision personnel to the locker rooms and the PE area.
  • Last year we held a Bullying workshop for targeted students.
  • We continue to promote the REACH for Success program and will be instituting a Positive Behavior Support incentive program sponsored by our PTA and Booster Club.
Questions: How are the bathrooms these days, especially the boys’ bathrooms?

Mr. S: The biggest problem we have in the bathrooms is graffiti and students not cleaning up after themselves. We are looking for volunteers throughout the day to assist us with supervising the bathrooms.

Question: Do Wright MS students get the message that we have a no tolerance policy for bullying?

Mr. S: Yes, I believe students are getting the message as they hear from other students how we are addressing the matter. Although, our suspensions have been reduced since last year, we still have had some reports of bullying from students in the same grades.

Question: What kind of supervision do we have after school for classes and late pick ups/buses?

Mr. S: The YS Plus classes have hired four people to help supervise on Monday thru Friday until 6:00 pm. The school has assigned a campus aide to supervise the campus Monday through Friday until 4:30 PM. One of the administrators or an administrator designee supervises the late buses on Monday and Wednesday. All students are sent to the PE yard 30 minutes after dismissal where they can be picked up by their ride.

Question: How is supervision handled in the locker rooms?

Mr. S: There is at least one person directly walking around, supervising the locker room every period, as the other staff members assist the students with their needs.

Question: What can you report to parents to insure them that Orville Wright MS is doing everything it can to make the campus as safe as possible?

Mr. S: First let me say that fewer students are filing reports because incidents are down between students. We continue to tell the students and the parents to always report any incident. We also continue to bring parents and students together to try to find a solution to the problem. My experience has been that when parents get involved in their child’s school, many issues get successfully addressed.
